Horses and “large canvas” were the focus this week for several painters at Aiken Center for the Arts, as the facility played host to a three-day workshop.
Windsor resident Eugenia Smirnova led eight fellow artists, Feb. 4-6, in producing colorful creations of horses — and one cow, from the paintbrushes of Wendy Gutfarb — with dimensions sometimes like those of real life.
“It’s never been done before in Aiken, and a bunch of brave souls joined the workshop, and we all had an incredible experience with it,” Smirnova said. “A blank canvas, just like a blank piece of paper, can be very intimidating.”
The workshop involved a few road hours for at least one participant: Susan DiFelice, of Chapel Hill, N.C. DiFelice, described on her website as “an equestrian and award-winning equine website designer and illustrator,” recalled having learned about the event through keeping up with the arts center’s activities.
“I put my name on the wait list. I had to juggle some things to be able to take it,” she said. “It was well worth it. I just had a wonderful time, and really enjoyed getting to see Aiken for the first time and meeting the people. They were very generous with their time… showing me the town and sharing the history.”
