DIY Pony Craft: How to Make a Pony Out of a Box
Steps to Make a Pony Out of a Box
Creating your own pony out of a box is a fun and creative activity that crafty horse loving kids are sure to enjoy. Follow these steps to bring your pony to life!
THE DESIGN
You may want to sketch it out on a piece of paper first so everyone will have a better idea about what they will be creating.
Supplies You Will Need
- A medium-sized shipping box: Ensure it’s sturdy and intact.
- Box cutters: For cutting out shapes.
- Scissors: For more detailed cutting.
- Paint and paint brushes: Various colors to decorate your pony.
- Pencil: For sketching your design.
- Sharpie markers: For outlining and detailing.
- Hot glue gun: To secure different parts.
- Yarn: For the pony’s mane and tail.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Hot Glue the Box Closed
With the help of a grown-up, use the hot glue gun to secure the top of the box closed. This will create a solid base for your pony.
Step 2: Draw the Horse Design On the Box
Using a pencil, sketch the horse design onto the box. Once satisfied with the outline, trace over the pencil marks with a permanent Sharpie marker to make them stand out.
Step 3: Paint the Box White
Paint the entire box white, except for the areas you plan to cut away. The white paint will serve as a primer, making the other colors more vibrant. The Sharpie lines should still be visible through the paint, providing a clear guide for the next steps.
Step 4: Cut Out the Ears and Legs
With the assistance of a grown-up, carefully cut out the ears and legs using box cutters. Make sure to follow the marked lines accurately.
Step 5: Paint Your Pony
Now comes the fun part—painting your pony! Get creative with the design. Choose your favorite colors for the body, face, legs, and saddle pad. You can personalize it by adding unique markings and patterns.
It’s starting to look so cute!
Step 6: Add Details with a Sharpie Marker
Once the paint is dry, outline the saddle pad, eyes, and the pony’s head with a Sharpie marker. This will add definition and detail to your pony.
Step 7: Make the Mane and Tail with Yarn
Cut yarn into similar lengths for the mane and tail. Lay these pieces across a shorter piece of yarn and tie it around the middle of the bundle. When picked up from the center, it will resemble a forelock.
Repeat this process for the tail, making the tail bundle longer if desired. Get creative! Your pony could have a purple forelock and tail, or even rainbow colored!
Step 8: Attach the Mane and Tail
With the help of a grown-up, use the hot glue gun to attach the yarn bundles to the pony. Secure the forelock on top of the head and the tail at the back.
Enjoy Your New Pony Friend!
